Tutor Time

Tutor Time is an outreach ministry held in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club of Volusia and Flagler Counties.  Volunteers have been helping students learn for over six years.  Loving tutors share God’s love through their presence, smiles, compassion and knowledge with a young child.  Focus is on basic elementary skills in math, reading and writing.  The New Smyrna Beach club, located on the corner of Mary and Milford Streets, has 94 members of whom 72% are minority, 48% are from single parent or foster homes, and 89% qualify for federal lunch program.  This ministry reaches out to poor children in our community and is a visible expression of our church’s commitment to all races and income levels.  It is an outreach that extends beyond those persons in our pews.

Tutor Time was awarded the 2003-2004 Volunteer of the Year Award by the United Way of Volusia and Flagler Counties.  More tutors are always needed.  No experience is required---just a loving person with a caring heart.  Tutoring is held from 2-3:30p.m. on Monday and Thursday during the school year.  If two afternoons is too much, volunteers can share a student with another tutor.

For information we invite you to call Ralph or Mary Gillam at 426-2796.

Guest Preacher:

Rev. Marilyn Beecher, Church and Community Worker, East Central District, Florida Conference

The Rev. Marilyn Beecher, a United Methodist missionary serving as a Church and Community Worker, will be the guest preacher on Sunday, August 22.  She will preach  at both the 9:30 and 11 a.m. services. Her sermon topic is Words and Deeds, based on Matthew 21:28-32.

Ms. Beecher’s responsibilities as a Church and Community Worker involve helping congregations in East Central Florida develop new outreach ministries, with special emphasis on work with children and youth, disaster response, immigrants, and hunger programs.

She says about her work: “If churches are to live up to the call of the Gospel, then they cannot just care for their own members, but they must be engaged with the people around them and be beacons of hope for the community.”

Prior to her current assignment, Ms. Beecher was a Church and Community Worker in Miami, working with three Haitian congregations to develop new outreach and evangelism ministries. She also served as a United Methodist missionary in Bulgaria from 1993 to 1997.
