Palm Sunday gives us a lovely story of Jesus’ being adored by the crowds; and, let’s face it, whenever the story has animals, we find it adorable and maybe even comforting. But looking a little deeper, Jesus is mocking Rome and Rome’s authority. Pilate would have arrived on a magnificent horse with guards and pomp and circumstance. Some in the crowd might be at both parades as they entered Jerusalem from different gates at different times and with different intentions. This is not the victory parade for Jesus. It is a very purposeful journey to the cross. Step by step God is heading to the cross.
