Sermon Series: The Way Forward

Sermon: Starting With Prayer

As we look at the 17th chapter of the Gospel of John, let us remember that the author of the Gospel of John uses some terms very technically. Important to us reading this passage more deeply is understanding some of the technical usage. The word “name” and the process of naming has great importance throughout scripture. Name changes mean something very important. We can read “name” to mean a deeper intimacy, a claiming and possession of something. The verb “to know” throughout scripture also carries a deeper sense of intimacy – in some ways the deepest sense. That intimate connection is clearly intended here. Lastly, let us remember that in the New Testament, the word “love” is more clearly translated “unconditional love”.
